Google Meet's free time limit, for groups and one-on-one

On a free Google account, hosting from a computer, a Meet call with three or more people ends at 60 minutes.

One-on-one calls get much longer: up to 24 hours. That split between group calls and one-on-one calls is the detail people miss, and it's the opposite of Zoom, where one-on-one calls are capped too.

Only the host's plan counts. Paid plans remove the 60-minute cap: Workspace Individual, a one-person plan, and the Business plans let the host run group calls for up to 24 hours.

What happens when you hit the limit

• At 50 minutes, everyone in the call hears a chime and sees a message that the call is about to end.
• At 60 minutes the call ends for everyone at once.
• Screen sharing and captions stop with the call.
• To carry on, everyone has to join a call again.

How to extend a Google Meet call past 60 minutes

1. Start a new call straight away

When the call ends, start a new Meet call and have everyone join again. It breaks the flow, and it forces a scramble right at the hour.

2. Let someone on a paid plan host

The limit follows the host. If someone on the call has a paid Google plan, have them start the meeting and the 60-minute cap doesn't apply. Otherwise, the host can upgrade their own Google account to extend the call.

3. Workspace Individual, for one person

Workspace Individual is Google's one-person plan. It lets its holder host group calls of up to 24 hours. If you're the only one who runs long calls, it's the smallest step up.

4. Google Workspace for the team

Workspace Business plans remove the 60-minute cap, and they come with a 14-day free trial. They're billed per user: Business Starter is $8.40 a month each on the flexible plan, and less with a yearly commitment. That works well if one or a few people organize calls. The cost adds up as more people on the team need to host.

If you'd rather not extend a call at all, plan calls in 50-minute blocks with a break.

What each workaround really costs

Restarting costs flow and time in every call. Workspace costs money every month, and like Zoom Pro it's priced per person, so the bill follows how many people on your team host, not how much anyone actually meets.
